The Spanish Colonial Arts Society will sponsor the second annual Las Cruces Spanish Market.
Approximately 50 Spanish Colonial artists from around New Mexico will take part in this event, bringing to Southern New Mexico a critical mass of exponents of tinwork, colcha, retablos, straw-work, weaving, jewelry, filigree, pottery, ironwork and carving.
On-stage performers will also be in attendance, with the sights and sounds of Hispanic New Mexico.
Admission to the event will be $6 per person, $10 per couple. Children 12 and under will be admitted free of charge.
As early as 1913, the Society for the Revival of Spanish Arts and later, the Society for the Restoration and Preservation of Spanish Mission Churches of New Mexico, were collecting traditional New Mexico art.
Both organizations were the precursors when, on October 29, 1929, author Mary Austin and artist & author Frank C. Applegate and friends and collectors officially founded the Spanish Colonial
The initial Spanish Market was an effort to support and promote the local New Mexico art forms, as well as the men and women who created them.
While the annual Spanish Market is held on the Santa Fe Plaza the last weekend of July, there is also the Winter Spanish Market, now held in Albuquerque, typically the last weekend in November at Hotel Albuquerque.
The choice of Hotel Encanto is an apt one for this event. This is a hotel with an ambiance reflective of Spanish and Mexican Colonial history and tradition.
Hotel Encanto was recently selected by Virgin Galactic as the Official and Preferred Hotel and Resort to service the astronauts and their families who will be traveling to Spaceport America.
